My whiskey journey started many years ago, and throughout that time, Citizens has been one of our go‑to spots in Boston for trying new pours. We’ve been coming here since it first opened in 2010—back when it was Citizens Public House & Oyster Bar. It’s where I tried Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year for the first time in 2014, and I’m pretty sure our old whiskey cards are still tucked away somewhere in the back. So, when the restaurant recently revamped its space and reached out with an invitation to their Burns Night celebration, we didn’t even have to think twice. Let’s dive into the event.
The event to celebrate Burns Night took place yesterday and was led by Simon Brooking—an Edinburgh native, a member of the Robertson Clan, and the Senior Ambassador of Scotch Heritage at Beam Suntory. This year’s theme was “The Elements of Islay: Peat, Fire, and Salt.”
The menu included: Welcome Cocktail featuring Laphroaig Select Whisky; Raw Bar of Local Oysters and Shrimp Cocktail; Oyster Luge featuring Bowmore 12 Year (“Best Whisky of the Year, 2024); Whole Roasted HOGgis Pig Dinner; Drams of Laphroaig 10 Year Sherry Oak Finish Whisky, Laphroaig Elements 3.0 and two surprises, Bowmore 25 Year and Glen Garioch 1995; Seasonal Sides like Neeps and Tatties; and Toffee Bread Pudding.
The night echoed with bagpipes, song, and poetry—a true celebration of tradition. It was my first Burns supper, and it surpassed all expectations. The room was bright with laughter and a collective joy for Robert Burns and the vibrant spirit of Scotland.
If you’ve never attended an event hosted by Simon Brooking, you’re missing something special. His love for whisky shines through everything he does, and he effortlessly captivated the room with his singing and poetry.
The food was nothing short of amazing. I’ve never had a disappointing meal at The Citizen, and last night continued that streak. Every element—veggies, hog, sides, dessert—was executed beautifully. Glancing around the room, I couldn’t find a single plate with a morsel left behind.
While the food impressed, what stood out even more was the exceptional staff and service. Everyone was gracious, attentive, and made the evening feel special.
And then there was the whisky. I was lucky enough to try three expressions that were new to me: Laphroaig Elements 3.0, Bowmore 25 Year, and Glen Garioch 1995. Each deserves its own proper write-up, which I’ll be sharing soon.
If you live in the Boston area and haven’t been to The Citizen yet, it’s an absolute must—especially if you love great food and whisky. And when it comes to Burns Night, they host an annual celebration each January that’s truly special. Go to one if you can; the food, the whisky, the music, and the people you’ll meet make it an unforgettable night.
Cheers!
