This past Christmas, a friend surprised us with an incredible gift: the Ardbeg Traigh Bhan 19-Year Small Batch Release (Batch TB/03-10.10.01/21.BL). Before this, we had the pleasure of enjoying Batch TB/02-18.09.00/20.JT, so naturally, I’m excited to see how this release compares. But first, a few additional notes before diving in.
Traigh Bhan (pronounced “tri-van”) is a beach on Islay, locally known as the Singing Sands. Ardbeg’s 19-Year Traigh Bhan is released annually in small batches, each distinguished by a unique code that tells its story:
TB: Traigh Bhan
03: Batch number
10.10.01/21: date when distilled and bottled.
BL: distillery team member who helped craft the bottling—in this case, Distillery Manager Colin Gordon.
Nose: salt, wood smoke and zest
Palate: peat smoke, pepper, cloves, light sweetness
Finish: pepper and smoke
ABV: 46.2%
This expression is not for the faint of heart—you need a true appreciation for peated whiskies to enjoy it. The nose and palate deliver an unmistakable wave of bold peat smoke, as expected from Ardbeg, but it’s artfully balanced with warming notes of pepper and cloves, complemented by a subtle sweetness that softens the edges. Compared to Batch TB/03-10.10.01/21.BL, this release feels slightly smoother and less aggressive, with the gentle sweetness providing a welcome counterpoint to the intense peat. It’s a classic Ardbeg—powerful, complex, and unapologetically smoky—perfect for those who love the brand’s signature style. As a devoted fan of peated whiskies, I’m going to savor every drop.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
