We recently had the pleasure of sampling two remarkable expressions from The Macallan Harmony Collection—one in collaboration with JING Tea and the other with Cirque du Soleil. The Harmony Collection is an annual limited-edition release that celebrates creativity and craftsmanship. The JING Tea-inspired expression draws from the delicate notes of Phoenix Honey Orchid Tea, while the Cirque du Soleil edition, aptly named Vibrant Oak, offers a bold and dynamic profile. Now, let’s dive into the tasting experience.
JING Phoenix Honey Orchid Tea: Matured in sherry-seasoned American oak casks and sherry-seasoned European oak casks.
Nose: apricots, honey and oak
Palate: lightly sweet, peaches, citrus and floral notes
Finish: fruity and sweet
ABV: 43.9%
Costs: $160-$190
Cirque Du Soleil Vibrant Oak: Matured in a combination of first-fill sherry-seasoned American oak casks and refill sherry casks.
Nose: vanilla and fruit
Palate: vanilla, cake, apples, light sweetness and oak
Finish: vanilla and light sweetness
ABV: 44.2%
Costs: $200
Of the two, my favorite was the Cirque du Soleil Vibrant Oak. That’s largely because I’m not a big tea drinker, and the JING Tea expression carried pronounced tea notes that didn’t quite resonate with me. It wasn’t unpleasant, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression—I didn’t feel compelled to revisit it after the first sip.
In contrast,Vibrant Oak offered a delightful balance. It brought forward those inviting cake-like notes without tipping into excessive sweetness. I appreciated its lightness, yet it still delivered depth and complexity in the dram.
The drawback? These expressions come with a hefty price tag for what they offer. Do you need them in your life? Absolutely not. Will you be perfectly fine if you don’t sample them? Yes, without a doubt. Don’t get me wrong—they’re not bad by any means—but if you’re considering spending that kind of money, in my opinion, they simply aren’t worth it.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
