Over Thanksgiving weekend, we had the chance to sample Bruichladdich Organic 2003 Anns An T-Seann Doigh—a whisky I’d never encountered before. ‘Anns An T-Seann Doigh’ translated from Gaelic as ‘in the traditional way.’ This was Bruichladdich’s first organic release, distilled in 2003 and bottled in 2009. It’s likely no longer available, but I couldn’t resist sharing my thoughts. Let’s dive in.
Nose: peat and zest
Palate: citrus, vanilla and lightly sweet
Finish: lightly zesty and sweet
ABV: 46%
Cost: $100+
When I think of Bruichladdich, peat and heavy smoke immediately come to mind. This expression, however, is nothing like that and completely breaks that mold. It opens bright and citrus-forward, with subtle vanilla undertones and a delicate sweetness, and almost no peat on the palate. At first, it felt a little thin—almost watered down—but not in a bad way. I enjoyed it because it was so different from what I usually expect from this brand. The lightness was unexpected and refreshing. I like the direction Bruichladdich is taking here and hope to see more organic releases in the future. If you’re in Boston, we found this at Eastern Standard—they still have it on the menu, so it’s worth a visit if you want to give it a try.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
