Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and if your plans take you to New Hampshire, let me tell you about Tamworth Distilling in the charming town of Tamworth, NH. I recently had the chance to visit with friends, it was just a little over two hours from Boston, and this place offers a unique experience. Ready for my review? Spoiler alert: what I loved most might surprise you!
The distillery has a cozy, inviting vibe that perfectly matches its small-town charm. Their tasting bar offers a great way to explore the flavors, and they do have something for everyone, but here’s something many visitors don’t know—New Hampshire law limits your tasting options. You can either enjoy a flight and nothing else, sip two cocktails and stop there, or mix it up with three samples and one cocktail. It’s a unique rule that makes planning your tasting experience a little more strategic. So, if you do visit, keep that in mind.
I went in thinking I’d do three samples and a cocktail but ended up just enjoying the samples. My whiskey lineup included William Whipple’s Winter Wheat Whiskey, Old Man of the Mountain Bottled in Bond Bourbon, and Tamworth 1766 Straight Rye Whiskey. The Winter Wheat Whiskey stole the show—lightly sweet, with hints of caramel, baking spices, and chocolate. As for the other two, they weren’t quite to my taste. I did sneak a taste of my friends’ cocktails though—pretty good!
Then came the unexpected highlight: my husband’s cordial flight. One sip of the Tamworth Garden Sierra Fig Cordial and I was hooked. It tasted exactly like a fig newton—rich, sweet, and perfect for dessert. I didn’t buy a bottle and regret it. I didn’t try everything they had to offer, but, if we make another trip, it won’t be for the whiskey, but rather the cordials—and you can bet the Fig Cordial will be coming home with us!
Cheers!
