Tamdhu 12-Year, 15-Year and 18-Year

I was genuinely excited to discover this sample pack, especially since I hadn’t explored this distillery much before. Priced at just $19.99, it included three expressions: a 12-Year, 15-Year, and 18-Year. The distillery, originally established in 1897, was unfortunately shuttered in 2010. Thankfully, Ian Macleod Distillers revived it in 2012, staying true to its heritage by using the original production methods. Today, they continue to mature their whisky exclusively in 100% sherry oak casks, preserving the rich character that defines their spirit.

Tamdhu 12-Year (43% ABV):

Nose: oak and light sweetness

Palate: silky with notes of malt, sherry and oak

Finish: spices with a bite

Tamdhu 15-Year (46% ABV):

Nose: zesty and fruity

Palate: fruits, a bit tart, almonds and light sweetness

Finish: sherry and vanilla

Tamdhu 18-Year (46.8% ABV):

Nose: sherry, raisins and oak

Palate: sherry, vanilla and sweetness

Finish: warming with spices and fruits

Sampling this pack was a great way to get acquainted with the distillery, and I appreciated how each expression built upon the last. The 12-Year, while well-crafted, was the most assertive of the trio—slightly rough around the edges with a noticeable bite. The 15-Year offered a more balanced profile, with a softer finish and a touch of sweetness, complemented by subtle almond and fruit notes. The standout for me was the 18-Year: elegant, smooth, and richly layered with sherry and spice. While none of the whiskies completely blew me away, the sample pack is a worthwhile experience—especially considering the value, given the higher price points of the 15- and 18-Year bottles.

Cheers!
