I first discovered this brand when they launched their original Blue Bottle Gunpowder Tea Gin. They’ve since expanded their lineup, and instead of committing to two full-sized bottles, I picked up this mini trio sample set for just $9.99. It includes 50ml bottles of three gins, including the original.
Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin is crafted by The Shed Distillery, located in Drumshanbo, County Leitrim, Ireland. Created by PJ Rigney, the vision behind this gin was to blend exotic oriental botanicals with traditional Irish ingredients. I’ve previously reviewed their original blue bottle gin here on my blog—you can check it out by clicking here.
A bit of background: the gin is distilled using medieval-style copper pot stills. The core botanicals include juniper berries, angelica root, orris root, caraway seed, coriander seed, meadowsweet, cardamom, and star anise. In addition, vapor-infused botanicals such as Chinese lemon, oriental grapefruit, kaffir lime, and gunpowder tea add a unique twist. Gunpowder tea, which lends the gin its name, is a type of green tea that’s slowly dried and hand-rolled into shiny pellets.
In addition to these options, they also offer a few others, including a Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey. Now, let’s dive into the two new flavors I recently sampled.
The main difference between the California Orange Citrus and the Sardinian Citrus gins really comes down to the type of citrus used. I sampled both neat and over ice. When tasted neat, they were surprisingly similar. However, over ice, the distinction became clearer — the Sardinian Citrus had a cleaner, crisper profile, while the California Orange leaned more toward the flavor of orange peel. I really enjoy this brand overall, but I’d say you don’t necessarily need every flavor. While the differences are noticeable when chilled, they’re quite subtle. So, ultimately, the choice you go for will depend on your personal taste.
