Recently, I had the chance to try the Compass Box whisky called Secrets of Smoke. As the name implies, this blend includes peated whiskies, but it differs significantly from their Peat Monster expression. If you didn’t enjoy Peat Monster, I believe you’ll find Secrets of Smoke much more appealing. Let’s get into it.
This expression features whiskies such as Laphroaig, Bowmore and Caol Ila, and it even incorporates their own Peat Monster in the Blend. It is bottled at cask strength and appears to be a limited-edition expression.
Nose: brine, smoke and fruit
Palate: chocolate, spices, red fruit and smoke
Finish: light sweetness and smoke
ABV: 52%
Cost: $130-$150
Let me clarify that I do enjoy their Peat Monster whisky. However, I found this one expression to be more approachable. By that, I mean that I believe those who didn’t enjoy Peat Monster might like this one. The smokiness in this blend is slightly more subtle but well-balanced with notes of chocolate and red fruit. I personally found it to be fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed every sip. I do think the price is high. While I’ve been enjoying many whiskies I’ve sampled lately, I often find them to be too expensive. This is a wonderful whisky, and if you have the means to buy it, it’s a great choice. However, I would advise against paying more than what it’s worth.
Cheers!
