I am a huge fan of Dalmore; I own their 14-year expression as well as their King Alexander III, which happens to be my favorite among their range. Recently, I had the opportunity to try their Poor Wood Reserve, and while I did enjoy it, I wouldn’t consider it one of my top preferences. Let’s get into it.
This expression was crafted to commemorate Dalmore’s enduring partnership with Graham’s Port Lodge in Portugal. The whisky is initially matured in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels and then further finessed in aged Tawny Port pipes.
Nose: dark fruits and citrus
Palate: light sweetness, chocolate, caramel and nuts
Finish: fruity and citrusy
Cost: $80-$90
ABV: 46.5%
Although this whisky is quite enjoyable, it didn’t have the same level of impact on me as some of Dalmore’s other expressions have in the past. The influence of the Tawny casks brings forth delightful fruity notes that are perfectly balanced with flavors of chocolate, caramel, and subtle hints of nuttiness. While I appreciated it, if you are considering purchasing a Dalmore at this price point, I would recommend exploring their 12-Year Sherry Cask Select. In my opinion, it offers a similar flavor profile, but with an ever-better taste and a slightly more affordable price.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
