Glenmorangie has recently introduced another addition to their Tale series, and this time it’s called Ice Cream. Before diving into this expression, I also had the opportunity to sample A Tale of Tokyo, which I can share my thoughts on later this week. In all honesty, I blind bought this bottle, so let’s find out if it was worthwhile.
In creating this expression Dr Bill aimed to encapsulate the delightful flavors typically associated with an ice cream parlor, but in the form of whisky. This whisky is matured in bourbon casks, with the first whisky being finished in high vanillin casks. Additionally, the new oak casks used in maturing were toasted in a way that enhanced the vanilla characteristics.
Nose: vanilla, toffee and hints of coconut
Palate: light coconut, baking spices, vanilla and almonds
Finish: lightly sweet and vanilla
Cost: $99 (what I paid)
ABV: 46%
Out of the Tale expressions released by Glenmorangie, this one is by far my favorite. For reference, I have tried A Tale of Cake, Winter and Forest, as well as A Tale of Tokyo (I will cover it in a different post). Surprisingly, even my husband, who hasn’t like any of the Tale expressions, really liked this one.
On the nose I was immediately hit with the prominent note of vanilla, which you get throughout the dram. This whisky is undeniably vanilla-forward and that note is balanced with the touches of baking spices and almonds. I appreciate that while sweet, the sweetness was perfectly measured and not overwhelming.
I had some reservations when blind buying this bottle, but I am very happy to say that I really enjoyed this one. In my opinion, it is the best Tale expression thus far. While I wouldn’t say it is a must-have (especially at this price), if you are wanting to try one of their Tale expressions, this is the one I would recommend. It’s their best one yet.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
