When Bruichladdich comes to mind, peated whisky is often the first thing that I associate with it. However, it’s important to note that now all Bruichladdich whiskies are peated. This Bruichladdich 18-Year expression is one of those unpeated variations. Now let’s dive into the details of this whisky.
This expression is crafted by utilizing a blend of Scottish Mainland, Islay, and Organic barley. All these grains can be traced back to the farm with which Bruichladdich has had a partnership since 2004. The whisky is matured on Islay in ex-Bourbon casks, as well as a select few wine casks such as Sauternes and Port Casks. Finally, it is bottled at cask strength.
Nose: vanilla, apricots and honey
Palate: fruit, oak, honey, spices and cereal
Finish: fruit and oak
ABV: 50%
Cost: $185
This whisky is beautifully made. On the palate, you’ll get an abundance of fruit, spices, and honey, with the occasional hints of cereal. It offers a well-balanced flavor profile, and despite being cask strength, it manages to avoid any harsh or overpowering qualities. I particularly enjoy the delicate sweetness and the influence of the wine casks that are present throughout the dram.
This is an exceptional whisky in my opinion that showcases the high quality of the grain used. However, I must admit that I find the price to be quite steep. Personally, I believe it is overpriced, which is a shame considering it’s quite a remarkable whisky. While I love it, I would not be willing to pay $185 for it.
Cheers!
