San Patricios 7-Años Single Malt Irish Whiskey

I am continuing my Irish whiskies features this week. Today, I want to introduce a unique Irish Whiskey that pays homage to the story of the 200 Irish Volunteers, known as the San Patricios, who fought for Mexico during the Mexican-American War of 1846-48.

This Irish Whiskey is a 7- Años (for those not familiar with Spanish, ‘años’ in Spanish translates to ‘years’ in English) single malt whiskey that is matured in Bourbon, Tequila, and Mezcal Casks. The Tequila and Mezcal Casks are sourced from the Jalisco and Oaxaca regions in Mexico. Each batch is bottled at cask strength and is limited to 1850 bottles for each batch.

Now, let’s talk about the whiskey itself. I believe the Irish Whiskey in this bottle is Irish American whiskey. I sampled this at an Irish American tasting booth, and they also happen to be the importers of this brand. Without giving too much away, I enjoyed this whiskey so much that I purchased a bottle. So, let’s dive in.

Nose: agave, oak and cinnamon
Palate: cinnamon, pepper, and agave
Finish: light sweetness and spices
Cost: $50 (what we paid)
ABV: 50%

This whiskey is exceptional! On the nose, you detect that distinct tequila DNA, and those tequila casks do leave their mark throughout the sip. The influence from the casks elevates this whiskey to a new level. The flavors of pepper and cinnamon are perfectly harmonized. And, despite being a cask strength whiskey, it is remarkably smooth with well-balanced spice and just the right amount of sweetness. It’s very reminiscent of another favorite whiskey of mine, the Writers Tears Tequila Cask Finish Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.

This is a fantastic whiskey, and I must say, the price is truly amazing considering both the exceptional quality and the fact that it’s a cask strength whiskey. It’s worth mentioning that I saw this advertised at lower prices in other liquor stores compared to what we paid for it. I absolutely loved it and would recommend trying if you come across it.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.

Wouldn’t mind a taster of this whiskey myself.
Only problem is it doesn’t appear to be on release in Ireland – yet!

Interesting that it’s not released there. Hopefully they will soon.
