Redbreast Missouri Oak Irish Whiskey

With St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to highlight an Irish Whiskey. Personally, I am a fan of Redbreast, and I recently had the opportunity to sample their Missouri Oak Edition. This edition is part of their American Oak series. In the production of this expression, their single pot whiskey is initially aged in a combination of sherry and ex-bourbon barrels. The final maturation stage, ten months in Virginia Missouri Oak barrels.

Nose: apples, spices and toffee

Palate: cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, berries and pepper

Finish: spices and oak

Cost: $130-$190

ABV: 50.5%

I found this expression showcases spices, extending beyond the realm of baking spices. Notably, you’ll detect the presence of pepper notes, which are perfectly balanced by fruity undertones. Despite being a cask strength, I found the level of bite to be very manageable. I very much enjoyed the interplay between hints of sweetness and the tanginess of berries.  These notes were perfectly enhanced and harmoniously blended with all the baking spices.

I must admit, I did enjoy this whiskey. However, my concern lies with the price point. In my opinion, this whiskey does not justify a price tag of $190. If you happen to find this whiskey at a discounted price, then it is worth giving it a try. If you are unable to find it at a discounted rate, I believe you can pass on this one. While it’s good, it’s not $190 good.

Cheers!
