As you’re all aware, Islay whiskies are my all-time favorite to imbibe! Laphroaig, however, holds a very special place in my heart, it’s the very first distillery I visited when I finally made the pilgrimage to Islay. Every year on our wedding anniversary my husband and I enjoy a dram of Laphroaig’s 2005 Vintage Cask PX, I Love You. To say we love this brand would be an understatement. That’s why last night was so much fun! A half mile from my home, Laphroaig hosted a swanky dinner at the Copley Fairmont’s stunning Oak Room to promote their soon to be released Islay Festival Cairdeas 2024 whisky and to share a wee dram of their 25-year-old.
Laphroaig 25-Year: This whisky was beautiful and the one with the least amount of peat flavoring. Don’t get me wrong, the peat is there but it doesn’t hit you in the face as most Laphroaig expressions do. On the nose you get smoke, with cinnamon, apples and custard. You are then taken on a tropical vacation when the juice dives onto your palate with notes of pineapple and mango. It is very smooth and finishes off with a light smoke. Fantastic expression!
Cairdeas 2024 Cask Favorites: This is a limited release expression created for the famous Islay Festival. For this bottling they took their 10-year expression and matured it in cask from two popular previous releases: 2019’s Triple Wood and 2021’s PX cask. It is then bottled at 52.4% ABV. This offering is not yet available in the US but should be arriving very soon. This one is much peatier and stronger than the well-developed 25-year old. On the nose you get baking spices with notes of vanilla and oranges. In the palate you get fruit, vanilla, toffee and that very signature campfire taste with finishing notes of pepper and smoke. I absolutely loved it.
These are two expressions I would happily add to our shelves but if I had to pick a favorite it would have to be the 25-year. There was something special about this one. It was smooth, lightly smoked and had all the tropical vibes. A huge thank you to Laphroaig for including me in this event. If you’re a peat lover these are worth the try.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
