Aberlour A’Bunadh Cask Strength

Aberlour (meaning, the mouth of the chattering burn, in Gaelic) is a single malt brand I really enjoy. I’ve also sampled their A’Bunadh (meaning, of the origin, in Gaelic) Cask Strength before, however the one I previously had was 59.7% (you can find this review post here on my blog) while this one sits at 60.3%. So, a tad bit stronger.

This whisky is meant to pay homage to Aberlour founder James Fleming. It is matured exclusively in Spanish Oloroso sherry butts and it’s a no age statement whisky.

Nose: sherry, oranges, and spices

Palate: raisins, bitter oranges, baking spices, and dark chocolate

Finish: bitter, spices and oak

Cost: $100 (depending on where you buy)

ABV: 60.3%

This whisky is heavy with the raisin, bitter, and baking spice notes. It’s strong, very warm and a whisky not everyone will enjoy. All that aside, I think it’s fantastic. At the front end of the sip my first thought was why am I drinking this, but as the whisky hits the back end of your throat that is where the full appreciation comes in. It’s warming, spiced and for a person who doesn’t like raisins, I enjoyed how the raisin notes paired well with the dark chocolate.

This whisky is strong, beautifully made and I loved it.

Cheers!
