This bourbon was produced by District Made Spirits which was distilled by One Eight Distilling in Washington DC. Sadly, this distillery has closed. I got the chance to taste this because our friends had a bottle but, before this we had not heard of this brand before.
The one we tried was a cask strength Private Barrel Selection whiskey for Standard Market. It’s 11 years old, finished in Calvados casks and selected by Standard Market.
Nose: oak, sweetness and vanilla
Palate: baking spices, apples, vanilla, apricots, and light sweetness
Finish: strong, warming, and spiced
ABV: 61.1%
Truthfully, I really wanted to love this, but I found it to be a bit pungent in taste. That had nothing to do with it being a cask strength whiskey, but rather the heavy influence of the Calvados cask. The notes in this whiskey were heavy and quite an experience. It’s fruit forward and heavy on the baking spices. You get a momentary reprieve of light sweetness, but it wasn’t enough to fully save the sip. I do appreciate a good strong warming whiskey, but this one took it a step further. It was a drinking experience but happy it was a whiskey we got to try and not a blind buy.
Cheers!
