Ardbeg is truly one of my favorite whisky brands. But, if I’m being truthful, the last couple years their products and their pricing have been a total miss for me. The only recent product I absolutely loved and was so surprised with was Ardbeg BizarreBQ.
Here we have another release that yes, we paid way too much money for, but I’m hopeful it’s going to be good. The Ardbeg Anthology Collection is inspired by strange creatures purported to stalk Islay. This one, pays homage to the Harpy. A Harpy has the head of a human and the body of an eagle.
This whisky is matured for 13 years in rare Sauternes wine casks and is married with classic Ardbeg ex-bourbon.
Nose: salt, peat and sweetness
Palate: smoke, woody, balsamic and light sweetness
Finish: smoke and cinnamon
Cost: $160 (what we paid)
ABV: 46%
What truly sets this whisky apart from other Ardbeg I’ve had recently, the bits of sweetness not only in the nose but throughout the dram. I have not had an Ardbeg with this level of sweetness so, it stands out for me. The smoke and sweet notes in this dram are so harmoniously balanced and delicious. It is smooth and true to that Ardbeg DNA.
The one thing we were able to do before we purchased this bottle was sample it so we didn’t go into it blindly. Do I think it’s worth the price, well for me it was, the sweet notes are phenomenal. Do I think it’s overpriced, 100% it is. Do I think you need it, no, you don’t, specifically at this price.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
