We stumbled across this whiskey recently at a tasting event and boy, were we surprised. To start, this whiskey is 100% Pot Stilled Rye. It’s cask strength and the one we tried was aged for 8 years. If you’re familiar with American whiskey, 8 years is pretty darn good when most others are aged about 3-4 years.
Old Potrero is distilled at Hotaling & Co. Distillery on San Francisco’s Potrero Hill.
Nose: oak, rye and spices
Palate: pepper, spices and warmth
Finish: rye and pepper
ABV: 65.43%
Cost: $89.99
This whiskey is bold, extremely peppery and truly packs a punch. When I first took a sip, my initial thought was that I was not going to like it. To me the pepper is the strongest note I could taste but after that initial hit of pepper the notes mellowed into spices and fully provided a nice warming effect.
It’s not a whiskey for the faint of heart but I truly enjoyed it and it was one of the most memorable whiskies I had that evening. It’s not your typical rye from your normal brands. I truly believe the cost is worth the juice. If you are looking for something new, this is a pretty darn good option.
Cheers!
