Surprise!! It’s yet another snowstorm hitting the east coast as well as many other states. Although it will be fun trying to make my way home from the office this evening, what keeps me excited at the moment is knowing that I will be going to France in a couple of months with a friend. Spring can’t get here fast enough.
Now if you are lucky to be home I’d say it’s the perfect stormy day (afternoon) to enjoy a nice dram of whisk(e)y or Bourbon. Why not let that dram be a Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey? The first time I had the Woodford Reserve was a few years back when I was traveling back home to Boston from San Francisco.
After not having tried it in a few years I purchased a small little bottle to retry it and see if my feelings about it had changed. They indeed had. Before I get into more of the whiskey here is a side note for all those non whisk(e)y and bourbon drinkers. A good way to get started (if you wanted to) is by looking for little mini bottles, like the mini Woodford Reserve I purchased. I’ve actually see more and more products done this way. It’s an easy way to try a product without having to buy a big bottle only to discover you don’t like it in the end. A lot of these little bottles range around $4-$8. To me it’s something worth doing.
Now, back to the whiskey, I’ll be honest; with my first tasting experience I didn’t think much of this whiskey. This time around I got a bit of a different experience. What made the difference this time? I took the time to sip, enjoy and make out the different tasting notes. It’s not perfect but I enjoyed it a lot more the second time around. I can detect its complexity and although not my favorite of all time, it’s certainly a whiskey I recommend trying.
Experience
Nose: Woodsy, oak at times, spices and vanilla
Palate: Vanilla, spicy, wood with hints of sweetness
Finish: Smooth, there was a burn that I felt all the way down to my stomach. It was delightful and I would say that burn was my favorite part.
If you are looking to buy I saw this bottle priced around $25-$39 and that certainly depends on where you buy. I am glad I tried this whiskey for a second time. It was worth the try and I got a nice appreciation for it.
Finally, if you are in one of the states being affected by this storm, I hope you all stay safe. Staying home this evening and enjoying a dram is never a bad thing on a stormy day.
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
