I saw this little guy as we were checking out and it magically ended up in my cart because I’m always on a mission to find a perfectly delicious ready-made cocktail. Also, how could I pass this up their claim that it’s the world’s oldest cocktail brand, that’s what sold it for me.
This cocktail is composed of angostura bitters, sugars, and Bols Barrel Aged Genever. What is Genever? Well, good thing Google was there to help me. It’s a clear, botanical malted-based spirit. So essentially, it’s as if a light Scotch and Gin had a baby. Any Genever aficionados can please correct me if I’m wrong.
I purchased their 200ml for roughly $7 and its 30% ABV. I poured my cocktail over ice and topped it off with an orange. Ooh boy, this cocktail is strong, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t taste the sugar nor the bitters. After this cocktail, I fully know what Genever tastes like. Even though it was a strong cocktail, I simply kept drinking it even with the fear of going blind. Truthfully, as the ice melted into the cocktail, it simply got better and there was something that kept me going back.
This cocktail is not for the faint of heart and won’t be for everyone. It’s for those who enjoy a strong cocktail or for those who want to know what Genever tastes like. As for me, I’m still trying to figure out if I like it or not, but it simply made me want to sample more from this brand.
Cheers!
