If you are not familiar with Blackadder (no worries, I didn’t know who they were till about two weeks ago), they are independent bottlers of single malt whiskies. Robin Tucek and John Lamond first established Blackadder in 1995. In 2000 they then started to offer their Raw Cask Series, which includes the whisky I am going to talk about today, Blackadder Raw Cask – Ledaig 2001 – 13 year-old.
With their Raw Cask series, Blackadder uses a special process that ensures all the cask sediments, oils, fats and anything that can be left behind is actually included in the bottle. You can see all the black particles floating below in the bottle we got.
For the production of this Ledaig 2001 – 13 year-old, only 318 bottles were produced and the one we acquired was number 82. Ledaig is from the Isle of Mull and is produced by the Tobermory distillery. Tobermory is the only distillery on the island.
After tasting this whisky, the Raw Cask series name made absolute sense because that is exactly how this whisky tastes, it’s raw, very very strong and quite frankly, it’s intense. I would not recommend this whisky to anyone just starting to drink whisky. Non-whisky drinkers may find it off putting, while I think those who love whisky will enjoy it. The only other Ledaig I have tasted is the Ledaig 10 year-old and it tastes nothing like this Blackadder version.
Nose: Peat, wood and smoke
Palate: It is very strong at first taste. The peat hits you hard but the mellowing of this whisky eventually follows making it quite enjoyable. I taste smoke, spice and light floral notes.
Finish: It’s a smooth end. Although it starts out very intensely the ending is very smooth and good. I’ll be honest however; it took me a couple of sips before my palate adjusted to its strength.
It was like nothing I had ever tasted before. It is so raw, strong and intense but it is good. It’s not your everyday drinking whisky but it is whisky to enjoy on occasion. This Raw Cask series is a series I would definitely like to explore. I do recommend trying and if you’ve had it, I would love to hear your thoughts.
PS – I hope you all got a chance to see the blood moon last night. May boyfriend and I camped out in my living room and took this pic.
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
